Should my business build an email list?
When you think “state of the art” marketing, you might not think that getting a bunch of prospective customers’ emails is right up there among the top.
It sounds like a dying business’ tactic. It sounds like it should go right along with advertising using a propeller plane pulling a printed banner.
You might even say something like, “I don’t read my emails.”
“People are just going to delete the email – even before they open it.”
“We did email for a while, but people didn’t respond or buy.”
We’re not here to say that you definitely should build an email list. But if you think it’s a bad idea, we’d like to know why. Because in our experience, it can be a massive help to your business.
And if you perform a simple search on Google, you’ll quickly find that others are saying the same thing. Email can be one of the best – if not the best – returns on investment that your business could make.
Here’s a few reasons why:
- Once you have a person’s email, you don’t have to pay to contact that person again. You just have to reach out to them via email.
This is not the case with most other forms of advertisement. For example, social media changes their methods and algorithms all the time so that you have to pay to reach your “followers” and people who “like” your page. You have to pay for printing and postage of every direct mail piece. Google Ads cost you money each time someone clicks on them.
- If people don’t like your content, they will unsubscribe. That means that you get a real feedback loop on what your audience cares about and what’s not at the top of their list. They do this per email, so you can start to figure it out on a case by case basis.
- Even if people don’t read your emails, you are still getting your brand in front of them. You may think that an email didn’t achieve much, but in a world where it costs you money for each set of eyeballs, you are branding with each email you send.
- If you have excellent content, people will look forward to your emails. Not only that, but they’ll forward your email to a portion of their contact list who may also be interested in your product or service.
- Some people make money every time they click the “send” button. And eventually, your business might have that opportunity. Each email you send provides your prospective customer with an opportunity to get in touch with you directly or do business with you online with a click of a button.
Email can be used as a highly social tool that can be built for free or for a low cost. It all depends on your goals and the time-frame in which you are looking to build your list.
As with any marketing, you need to do a solid job with your email list for it to yield results. Writing emails isn’t an instinct you’re born with.
Once you decide that emails are a good business decision, getting low-cost, qualified emails will be your next hurdle. Before you begin the journey of building an email list that brings in money each time you hit “send,” we’d be happy to discuss the strategy with you.
